Traces of the Past

The exciting past of Odsherred can be marvelled at in the museum. However, when exploring the country-side of Odsherred, many more ancient monuments reveal themselves: Burial mounds, castle ruins, rock engravings and fascinating churches from the Middle Ages.

Burial mounds

Odsherred is the area in Denmark with the largest number of burial mounds. Driving through the countryside, you cannot but notice that many hilltops have an “extra top” in the form of a Bronze Age barrow.

Probably the most interesting of these burial mounds are the 2 “jættestuer” in northern Odsherred. The so-called “troldstuer” (troll chambers) at Stenstrup is a two-chambered burial mound from the Stone Age. The chambers have been excavated, and can be seen from the inside. The same applies to the burial mound west of Nyrup, Birkehøj, which has an 11 metre long burial chamber.

Step inside the burial chambers of the “jættestuer” and be intrigued by Stone Age architecture. Keep in mind that these barrows were raised long before the pyramids.

Aurochs

The finding of two aurochs, which were killed by hunters approx. 9000 years ago, is the oldest testimony to human activity in Odsherred. One auroch is exhibited at the Danish National Museum, the other in the Zoologisk Museum - both in Copenhagen.

Also visit the monoliths on Sejerø island and near the town of Vig.

Dramatic Dragsholm Castle and Ulvsborg medieval fortress.

Dragsholm Castle, the oldest in Denmark, was originally a fortress from the early Middle Age. The castle is famous for having had the Earl of Bothwell among its “residents” when he was imprisoned in the castle’s dungeon.

Just south of Asnæs, there is Ulvsborg. Here visitors can visit a new medieval workshop, where one can experience everyday life in the early Middle Ages. There is a vegetable garden, manor tower, workshops and booths. Throughout the year the Middle Ages are brought to life with special events, including authentic meal preparation, archery, competitions and much more.
