Odsherred's Art

The artists discovered the area - and the term “Odsherred painters” became well known. The light and the landscape continue to inspire the area’s artists, while the forms of expression are varying.

Lundbye and Bovin

When, in 1840, J.Th. Lundbye painted the view from Vallekilde towards Dragsholm Castle and Nekselø, he “invented” Danish landscape painting.

Since then, many artists have felt the attraction of the light and the landscape of northwestern Zealand. In the 1930s, an artists' colony was established, including Sigurd Swane, Karl Bovin, Lauritz Hartz, Kaj Ejstrup and others, and the term 'Odsherred art' was established. For an introduction to the art of Odsherred, a visit to the Odsherred Museum of Art is highly recommended. The museum houses also the landscape paintings included in the “Odsherred route of art”.

The art is alive

Today Odsherred is blessed with a wide range of active artists and artisans, and the area provides the visitor with a large number of art galleries and showrooms. Many of the fine, local artists exhibit their works at Pakhuset in Nykøbing Sjælland and at Huset in Asnæs. Here you will find the works of Loui Michael, Egon Fischer, Jørgen Albrechtsen, Per Baagøe - among many others.

Among the artisans of Odsherred are Bodil Manz, Birgit Krogh, Majken a Grømma, just to mention a few of the approx. 50 artisans who have chosen Odsherred as a base. Most of them participate in the “Odsherred days of art”, traditionally taking place during the days of Pentecost, when thousands of art lovers visit the many studios, workshops, and showrooms.

Malergården

Sigurd Swane has a very special place in Odsherred art. In 1934, he built Malergården near Plejerup at the Isefjord, where the Swane family wished to create a peaceful, self-sustaining paradise.

Visit Malergården, now open to the public, and get an exciting insight into the surprising and extraordinary history of this family. The beautiful buildings, rooms, garden and yard tell an intriguing story about the art, the family, the visitors, the journeys and the dreams.

Malergården is being renovated by stages, but already now visitors can see Swane’s studio, the “radio room”, the closed terrace, the “school room” and the beautiful kitchen. The giant boulder barn contains a reception desk, auditory and café. The garden is a universe of its own, where visitors can enjoy the view of the fjord. Sigurd Swane’s son, Henrik, still lives in a side wing of Malergården, and he often gives lectures and guided tours.
